On Wednesday, July 18, 2018, JCC and NCCI hold the quarterly coordination meeting with the International NGOs in the Kurdistan Region, the meeting chaired by the Director General of the JCC, Mr. Hoshang Mohamed and co-chaired by the Executive Director of the NGO Coordination Committee for Iraq (NCCI), Mr. Aoron Moore to discuss the current humanitarian crisis, challenges and gaps in the Kurdistan Region.
Mr. Hoshang, on behalf of the KRG, extended thanks and appreciation to the humanitarian role the INGOs are playing in supporting the KRG’s efforts to help the displaced people, refugees and the host communities in Kurdistan. He briefed the participants on the humanitarian situation, gaps and needs of the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and refugees in the Kurdistan Region and continued services provided to them by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Mr. Mohamed also explained the KRG’s humanitarian policies towards the IDPs and refugees, reiterating the government’s continued support for the displaced people as well as the work of the local and the international NGOs in providing support to them, and encouraged the INGOs to focus more on the vulnerable IDPs and refugees rather than focusing on one area or province for delivering the humanitarian assistance.
Additionally, Mr. Hoshang highlighted several priority sectors for the INGOs to focus including, support to the camp management, food and cash for food programs, primary health care provision, implementing livelihood projects such as small scale and quick impact projects, preparedness for new emergency, and technical support and capacity building programs.
Then, Mr. Aoron Moore, the representative of the of the NCCI, thanked the JCC for all the facilitation and support that it provides for the NGOs to do their humanitarian activities in the Kurdistan Region and outside Kurdistan, stressing that for the next phase the NCCI would focus on its local partners to deliver humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable people.
Then, the representatives of the NGOs updated the meeting about their current activities and future plans to respond to the current humanitarian crisis and the recovery plans for the vulnerable communities as well as the gaps and challenges in front of the programs. Finally, the floor opened for questions and comments. It has been highlighted that the funding shortage has become the main critical challenge to continue their programs and projects across the board.
