On Wednesday, December 26, 2018, The KRG’s Minister of Interior Karim Sinjari and Dr. Mahdi al-Allaq, the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers chaired the eleventh meeting of the high-level committee in Erbil to discuss the situation of the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and the return process of the IDPs to their place of origin in the liberated areas.
The meeting discussed the situation of Mosul IDPs and other areas in the Kurdistan Region in detail and also talked about the situation in the liberated areas as well as the issues and challenges in front of the return of the IDPs and finding mechanism to overcome the challenges highlighted.
The meeting assessed the available options to find proper solutions to help facilitating a successful and voluntary return of the IDPs to their homes.
Additionally, the needs of the current IDPs in the Kurdistan Region’s camps thoroughly highlighted and stressed on the necessity to continue providing humanitarian assistance and services to them such as electricity, proper shelter, food, education, kerosene as well as the camp management costs until the situation is suitable and the conditions are met for them to return with respect and dignity.
Finally, several recommendations and options were prepared and agreed upon to be presented to the Iraqi Prime Minister for endorsement and then jointly implementing them in the interests of the IDPs and the return process.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Displacement and Migration, Deputy Interior Minister, Nineveh Governor, Director General of the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) and a number of Director Generals and directors from both sides.
