Director General, UNHCR representative discuss situation of refugees in Kurdistan Region of Iraq

On Monday, July 8, 2019, Mr. Hoshang Mohamed, the Director General of the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre, received Mr. Ayman Gharaibeh, representative of the UNHCR in Iraq and accompanied by Ms. Ita Shuota, the newly appointed UNHCR coordinator in the Kurdistan Region and Mr. Yousif Mahmood, Associate Liaison Officer.

Mr. Ayman introduced Mrs. Ita Shuota as the new UNHCR coordinator in the Kurdistan Region and they discussed cooperation and coordination between both sides.

In the meeting, the UNHCR representative thanked the JCC for its continued support and cooperation hoped that this support continues.

From his side, Mr. Hoshang welcomed the new UNHCR Coordinator, Mrs. Ita, and extended JCC’s full support and cooperation to her. He also   thanked UNHCR’s ongoing support to respond to the humanitarian crisis and providing technical support to JCC. He also valued the important role of the UNHCR in the Kurdistan Region.

Both sides also discussed the situation of the Syrian refugees in Kurdistan Region, particularly in the education sector as it has been under direct threat due to the lack of funding. If it is not supported, thousands of current students and new school ages will be losing the education.  They exchanged views to find a joint mechanism to support the education process for the Syrian refugee children in the Region.
